Annapolis
Maryland's capital mixes a dense historic core with 1920s-era neighborhoods such as Murray Hill and Eastport and tidal waterfront on the Severn River, Spa Creek, and Back Creek. Only about four in ten homes are detached single-family houses, so lots are often compact and closely spaced.

Severna Park
A peninsula community between the Severn and Magothy rivers where more than nine in ten homes are detached single-family houses, most built in the 1950s through 1970s in neighborhoods such as Oakleigh Forest, Fair Oaks, and Cape Arthur. Many neighborhoods have private beaches or marinas and active community associations.

Glen Burnie
The county's largest community, with roughly 30,000 homes: about half are detached single-family houses and a further share are townhomes, and more than two in five were built before 1970. Older grid neighborhoods sit alongside later subdivisions, and lots are generally modest.

Pasadena
A peninsula between the Magothy River and the Patapsco with about 12,000 homes, most of them detached houses or townhomes with a median build year in the mid-1990s. Water-privileged communities such as North Shore on the Magothy and Bodkin Pointe sit beside inland subdivisions with homeowners associations.

Crofton
A master-planned community begun in 1964 with split-levels, ranchers, and colonials from the 1960s and 1970s in the original sections and later phases around them; about four in five homes are owner-occupied. Crofton is inland, on public water and sewer, with no Chesapeake Bay Critical Area exposure.

- Anything attached to the house, including a deck, requires a building permit. Detached decks and fences are reviewed as accessory structures.
- In the Critical Area, new impervious surface such as a patio counts toward lot coverage limits and may require a Critical Area worksheet; a 100-foot buffer applies near tidal waters and wetlands.
- Permit applications are submitted online through the county's Land Use Navigator system.
